We woke up to a magnificent cloudy day! We walked to a nearby church before breakfast. A stork was nesting on the steeple. The sun colored the clouds.
After breakfast, we drove to Torrao and walked about, enjoying views of the countryside, with miles of cork and olive trees. We drove on to Alvito, where we bought homemade cake and pastry at a local market and took a break in the Pousada Castelo Alvito. As we drove on, we came upon the Roman ruins of Cucufate, a villa from the 1st century AD. It was still in good condition, with its final use as a monastery from the 1200's to 1700's. Our last stop was for lunch in Portel and a short visit to its hilltop castle, before returning to our castle in Alcacer do Sal. We had a wonderful day!
