Sicily

The ship docked in Trapani, Sicily, by 8 this morning.  Just after breakfast, Papa and I set off to explore the old downtown of Trapani, a narrow peninsula.  It is clean, beautifully built, and well maintained.  We rented a car near the port and toured the western part of Sicily.

We drove to Segesta, with its well preserved Doric temple, built in 450 BC.
The hills all around Segesta are covered with vineyards and olive groves.
As we continued our circle drive, we next visited Selinunte, the site of at least
five ancient temples built around 650BC.  The ruins were scattered over a
mile and a half of Mediterranean waterfront.  It was a stunning site!
As we made our way back to Trapani, we passed miles of salt pans near Marsala.
The salt pans date back to the time of the Greeks and Romans.
