Over the past dozen years, we've undertaken various projects on the ranch. Thirty plus miles of fence have been replaced, thirty plus miles of new water pipeline have been installed, thirty or so new drinkers installed, corrals have been improved, existing buildings redone, and so much more!
We currently have a grubbing project going on, quite unlike all the other projects. Colter rented a large piece of equipment and is pulling out all the mesquite on 80 acres, as an experiment to see if over time grasses will grow better. Mesquite are thirsty trees with long roots and they slurp up most of the moisture in the area where they grow. Colter pulls out trees and stacks them in piles, where they will eventually rot and become earth again.
Papa and I rode the ranger to check out the project on Saturday. It was the first time I had been on that particular ridge. After being on the ranch for thirteen years, there are many places yet to explore!
